PSYCHIATRY
WHAT IS A PSYCHIATRIST?
a psychiatrist is an MD who specializes in mental health. they are an actual doctor (in the general way that we think about it.) they assess both physical and mental health, as both things have some sort of connection to each other. they determine whether or not something is caused by physical condition, a mental condition, or a combo. they are the only kind of professionals in the mental health field who can prescribe medication for mental issues. a psychiatrist and a psychologist are not the same, as a psychologist offers spoken therapy and cannot prescribe medacine.
WHAT ARE SOME DISEASES TREATED BY PSYCHIATRISTS?
- schizophrenia
- depression
- bipolar disorder
- borderline personality disorder
WHY AM I INTERESTED IN PSYCHIATRY?
i am interested because the way the brain works is so interesting. i want to learn about how people work. i also have my own history with mental illness, and went to figure out how to work with it. the doctor becomes the patient.
